Bay Area Youth Are Learning to Row with Berkeley High Crew

LTR Camp 1 - 1

Berkeley High Crew’s first Learn-to-Row Camp of Summer 2014 was a success, with 32 campers learning the ABCs of a new sport and getting on the water with current Berkeley High varsity athletes and coaches.

Campers learned the basics of crew, including rowing terminology, equipment handling and, of course, how to row.

Berkeley High Crew is offering two more Learn-to-Row camps this summer: July 21 – 25 and August 18 – 22.  To learn more and register on-line visit our Summer Camps Page.

Race Report: 4th at Youth Nationals

Berkeley High Crew placed fourth in the Women’s Pair at the USRowing Youth National Championships held on Lake Natoma from June 13-15, 2014.  Berkeley’s pair of India Robinson and Lena Bertozzi qualified for Nationals at the Southwest District Championships in May and raced in a field of seventeen Pairs from across the country.

The regatta began on Friday with heats and the Jackets comfortably qualified for the Saturday’s Semifinals with a second-place finish in a time of 8:00.0.

4 3 Dublin Crew 8:34.124
5 6 Baltimore B 8:38.039
6 5 James Madison 8:42.656

The Jackets needed a top-three finish in their Semifinal on Saturday to makes Sunday’s Grand Final and overcame some nerves at the start to take second place.

Place Bow Name Time
1 1 Holy Names 8:03.281
2 2 Berkeley A 8:10.006

6 6 Dublin Crew 9:11.006

In Sunday’s Grand Final, the Pair from Marin proved to be the class of the field, taking first by nearly five seconds.  Places two through four were separated by only 3.4 seconds and Berkeley finished fourth, just one second out of the medals.

Place Bow Name Time
1 1 Marin 8:21.099
2 2 Holy Names 8:25.967
3 6 Saugatuck B 8:28.368
4 4 Berkeley 8:29.391
5 3 Saugatuck A 8:32.287
6 5 CRI 8:45.362

It was an excellent showing by Berkeley High, particularly in light of the boat’s youth and relative inexperience.  With India and Lena (both rising juniors) leading a group of talented and motivated athletes, the Jackets will be looking to build on this season’s successes in 2014-15.

Race Report: District Championships

With over 600 entries from 36 teams, this year’s Championship regatta was the largest yet and the competition was tougher than ever. Due to the high number of overall entries several Berkeley High boats had to compete in time trials on Friday evening in order to qualify for the sprint racing on Saturday and Sunday.  Berkeley’s Men’s Quad showed they had real speed in the time trial by placing 4th out of 23 and qualifying for the semi-finals on Saturday.  In the semis the Quad had a relatively comfortable row and cruised to a second-place finish, nine seconds ahead of third.  The Jackets’ performance earned them a place in the final on Sunday where they finished 5th in a very close field.

For the Women’s team, two boats comprised of all sophomores provided the most excitement over the weekend.  The Women’s Pair advanced from their heat with a second-place finish on Saturday afternoon and earned a bid to Youth Nationals by placing third in the  final.  In a very exciting race the Jackets had to overcome a  less-than-perfect start and needed every meter on the course to catch their competition.  They qualified for Youth Nationals by less than one second – just ahead of an experienced Newport Pair that raced at Nationals in 2013.

A newer, non-Nationals event, also provided a lot of excitement on Sunday afternoon.  Berkeley’s Women’s Open Straight Four (no coxswain) won a silver medal, just .34 seconds ahead of third and .75 seconds ahead of fourth place.

Complete results from all events are available for Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.
