Berkeley High raced at Lake Merced for the second time in 2014 and showed that the team is continuing to build speed midway through the spring racing season. The Jackets posted victories in the Men’s Varsity and Novice Quads and JV8, and in the Women’s Frosh 8.
The Men’s Varsity Quad was a particularly exciting race, with Berkeley’s scullers finishing first in a field of seven boats and edging out a skilled crew from River City by just three-tenths of a second.
Up next is the 510 Sprints, which Berkeley High will host on Sunday, April 6th. Participating crews include Artemis, Central Valley, Deep Water, Humboldt, Los Gatos, North Bay, Oakland Tech, Pacific, Palo Alto, and Serra HS.
The Battle of the Bay regatta between Berkeley High, St. Ignatius Prep, Oakland Strokes and Marin Rowing Association is usually the Jackets’ toughest early-season test, and the 2014 edition was no different, with Marin taking home most of the honors.
Conditions on the Estuary on Sunday morning, March 9 were ideal for rowers and spectators alike. Sunny skies and very little wind meant that the four Bay Area teams enjoyed great racing conditions.
Highlights for Berkeley High included the men’s Varsity and Junior Varsity 8s: both boats were in close battles with the crews from Saint Ignatius and were able to come out on top. Complete results of Berkeley High races are here (PDF).
Up next for the Jackets is the Pacific Invitational: March 23 at Lake Merced. Berkeley High will be racing crews from Artemis, Humboldt, Norcal, North Bay, Pacific, Palo Alto, River City, St. Ignatius, Serra High School, and Upper Natoma Rowing Club.
